Peter Green started his own band, Fleetwood Mac, after serving his blues-rock apprenticeship in John Mayalls Bluesbreakers; his haunting and desperately sad blues guitar style was merely a reflection of his own troubled personality, and by 1970 he had left the band. This short period in the bands history is often referred to as Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, but it is a period of superb blues music, phenominal guitar playing, and a world away from the music that was to follow on.

Full title - Very Best Of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. 20 tracks assembled here on this excellent retrospective which also adds 'I'd Rather Go Blind' by future Mac member Christine McVie's band, Chicken Shack, and Chris Coco's 2002 remake of 'Albatross' featuring Peter Green. Slipcase. Columbia. 2002.

Green joined John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers as a replacement for lead guitarist Eric Clapton. His haunting guitar-style was already evident in songs such as the Supernatural a style that he carried forward into Fleetwood Mac.

Unlike other British bluesmen, Peter Green really had the blues. His battles with mental health exacerbated by heavy psychedelic drugs were to be his undoing, but perhaps also contributed to the extreme beauty in his songwriting (e.g. Albatross), and the painfully poignent themes, and lyrics: in Man of the World he sings “I wish I had never been born” – and you feel he meant it.

This 20 track compliation features the very best of this period, with straight ahead blues, such as Rollin’ Man and Need Your Love So Bad, to the all out psychedelic rock of The Green Manalishi (With the Two Pronged Crown). Along the way there are biting rock classics Oh Well and some of the floating soundscapes that are perhaps a little better know Albatross and Dragonfly and Man of the World.

Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac were not just another UK blues-rock band; their skill in execution positioned them safely in the first division; anyone interested in UK blues rock or in blues-rock guitar playing needs to own this album!

John Mayalls Bluesbreakers was the finishing school for Brtish blues rock guitarists. They worked hard touring their version of the blues extensively in the UK and worldwide, gaining great acclaim in the process, but rarely the mass attention that many of these names would be attracting a year after leaving the band. But this was of course the aim; to play pure blues, for blues’ sake. This is the best decade of the bluesbreakers, and this compilation contains some of the best musicianship of the period. Unless you have the original albums, this compilation is a must

2010 four CD anthology from the British Blues legend. John Mayall's band, The Bluesbreakers ,were undoubtedly a hot-house for the British Blues scene in the late '60s and early `70s and it's quite staggering when you examine the roll call of floating members who served their apprenticeship with John Mayall including Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton, Mick Fleetwood, Peter Green, Keef Hartley, John McVie, Mick Taylor and Steve Winwood. This lavish box set contains 74 tracks, all newly remastered from the original master tapes, including five tracks released in Europe on CD for the first time. The 40-page booklet features sleevenotes by Mark Powell with rare and previously unseen photographs. Universal.

Black Merda are one of those bands that don’t fit neatly into any bag… they are soul, but not only soul. They are blues, but not only blues. They are rock, but not only rock. Black Merda mixed up a whole lot of what was going on in late sixties and early seventies America; folk, funk, blues-rock, psychedelia, with a heavy dose of social reality. And the result is electrifying.

Folks From Mother's Mixer

The first reissue of legendary funkateers Black Merda, out of print since its Chess Records release in the ‘70s. Too late for the Hendrix generation and too early for the Parliament/Funkadelic generation, this group defines ‘70s psychedelic folk-rock-funk!

Guitarist brothers Anthony and Charles Hawkins, and bassist VC Veasey, started out in Mississippi; but moved north to Detroit. And with Tyrone Hite on drums, Black Merda was formed. They had previously played as the Soul Agents backing Edwin Starr. They took Southern country and blues and mixed it with the Detroit soul and rock scenes. They signed to Chess records in Chicago and released two albums.

This CD is a reissue of both their Chess albums: Black Merda and Long Burn the Fire. Yes they had soul, but these cats really had the blues too; unlike the relatively privaleged British musicians that had started the blues-rock explosion in the mid 1960s, this was the real deal. There is a lot of pain in the lyrics: women problems, riots, poverty, murder, the Viet Nam war. The song Thats the Way it Goes captures this entirely – painfully sad lyrics over a track that is blues-funk-soul with a wah-wah pedal lead guitar sobbing in the background.

Musically, there are elements of early Hendrix-styled guitar-lead psychedelia: Prophet, Cythy Ruth and the bluesey Over and Over.

Good Luck, I Got a Woman and Lying are pure psychedelic funk that could easily have been on any of Funkadelic’s first few Westbound albums. Driving rhythyms, distorted wah guitars and some great vocal harmonies.

Ashamed and I don’t Want to Die are the same style soul-rock Jimi Hendrix was doing when he did Impressions covers – but this has way better singing!.

There’s country folk-blues: Think of Me and Set Me Free, going through to soul: We Made Up, For You, and Reality.

Other stand out songs include Windsong, musically somewhere between Hendrix’s Vilaneuva Junction and Funkadelics Maggot Brain, though perhaps not quite as poignant as either. But one of the most poignant songs i’ve ever heard is My Mistake. I won’t ruin the plot, in case you buy the CD, but you have to hear the lyric on this one!

This is a great CD, and if you are a blues-rock, psychedelic-soul or a fan of 60s and 70s black music in general you should buy this, it’s definately worth checking out!

What a track! Sit back and enjoy this funky late sixties blues jam. Fantastic musicianship, and a superb vocal performance from Buddy Guy. The entire show (also featuring Eric Clapton, and others) is available now on DVD.

The entire show was filmed over two days in London, March 1969. It featured some of the very best of British and American blues, rock and jazz musicians, jamming for the cameras; this was, after all, a show for film rather than a live audience.

These hugely talented musicians didn’t always gel together aswell as perhaps a band that played together all the time, but there are moments of greatness throughout. This DVD is well worth checking out for ANY blues rock fan.

In an empty, abandoned linoleum factory, west of London, some of the legends of rock, blues and jazz were brought together for an historic and amazing session.
Who was there? Eric Clapton was, and Jack Bruce and Buddy Guy, meeting Eric for the first time in what was to be a long relationship of the two greatest blues guitarists of a generation. Great drummers Buddy Miles and John Hiseman and the enigmatic superstar Stephen Stills. The extraordinary jazz legend Roland Kirk plays with his Quartet and then jams with the rockers.
The Modern Jazz quartet, one of the greatest ensembles in the history of modern music, add an ethereal, spacey calm to the proceedings. Only to have it shattered by Buddy, Jack, Buddy, Dick Heckstall-Smith, jumping on Mary Had A Little Lamb!
A powerful, haunting recording of one of the last great sixties musical events.
Track Listing:
1. Those Who Are About To Die, We Salute You: JON HISEMAN'S COLOSSEUM
2. Love Potion: BUDDY MILES, STEPHEN STILLS, JACK BRUCE, DALLAS TAYLOR, DICK HECKSTALL-SMITH, CHRIS MERCER
3. Under The Jasmine Tree: MODERN JAZZ QUARTET
4. Mary Had A Little Lamb: BUDDY GUY, JACK BRUCE, BUDDY MILES, DICK HECKSTALL-SMITH, CHRIS MERCER
5. Primitive Ohio: ROLAND KIRK QUARTET
6. Bad Hat: GLENN CAMPBELL WITH THE MISUNDERSTOOD
9. Hoochie Coochie Man: BUDDY GUY
10. Debut: JON HISEMAN'S COLOSSEUM
11. Stormy Monday / Kansas City: BUDDY GUY, ROLAND KIRK, JACK BRUCE, JIMMY HOPE, RON BURTON
12. I Say A Little Prayer: ROLAND KIRK QUARTET
13. My Time After A While: BUDDY GUY, JACK BRUCE, BUDDY MILES
14. Black Queen: STEVE STILLS, BUDDY MILES, JACK BRUCE, DICK HECKSTALL-SMITH, CHRIS MERCER
15. Slate 27: ERIC CLAPTON, ROLAND KIRK, DICK HECKSTALL-SMITH, JACK BRUCE, JON HISEMAN, RON BURTON, VERNON MARTIN
16. End Jam: ERIC CLAPTON, BUDDY GUY, STEVE STILLS, DUSTER BENNETT plus others...The pairings of Steve Stills with Cream bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Buddy Miles, plus Eric Clapton with bluesman Buddy Guy and jazz saxophonist Roland Kirk, are the attraction of this so-called "last great jam of the '60s," recorded in '69 (we're not told where). Results are mixed. Stills is negligible, but sparks fly when Kirk and Guy (who thoroughly outclasses Clapton) are onstage, especially together for "Kansas City"; and the veteran, understated Modern Jazz Quartet (then improbably signed to the Beatles' Apple label) are marvelous. But the whole enterprise is torpedoed by audio that sounds like an ancient, very scratched record album coming through the 2-inch speaker in a '62 VW Beetle (the grainy video is precious little better, and the film editing is atrocious). Hard to imagine any of the participants being thrilled that this dubious document is seeing the light of day. --Sam Graham

There are not many bands that can lay claim to have invented a genre, but Cream are one such band. All had served British blues apprenticeships: Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker with the Graham Bond Organisation, and Eric Clapton with the Yardbirds and John Mayalls Bluesbreakers. And then they got together to form Cream. A blues rock supergroup that would create some of the finest music of the 1960s.

Cream:Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Jack Bruce playing “Sunshine of Your Love” live circa 1968. What a performance too. Great musicianship. Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton were obviously two very influential musicians, and sales of the Gibson EB3 bass and Gibson SG Standard peaked in the late 1960s. “Sunshine of Your Love” hails from the absolute classic album Disraeli Gears (along with “Strange Brew” and “Tales of Brave Ulysees”).

Fresh Cream, the album that introduced this seminal super-blues trio to America, was perhaps a bit too blues-based to do the advance hype ("Clapton is God!") justice. Two of its three best-known tracks, after all, were blues covers. It was Disraeli Gears that turned Cream into a "supergroup." Here they pursue the psychedelic ideals of the era with total abandon (the LP cover art still stands as one of the 1960s' most striking designs), merging these ideals with their take on the blues and adorning the amalgamation with some superb pop craftsmanship. Of the eleven originals here, four--"Tales of Brave Ulysses," "SWLABR," "Strange Brew," and "Sunshine of Your Love"--earned major airplay. This, their excess-free greatest moment, does the Cream legend proud. --Bill Holdship

Jimi Hendrix is synonymous with blues rock. Whilst his psychedelic rock guitar playing is well known, his more subtle blues work perhaps doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

Jimi played a lot of blues, both live and on record. Songs such as Red House and Voodoo Chile graced his albums; but he also performed numerous covers live and in the studio. This collection features a range of tracks, played in different blues styles. There are some outstanding takes here – blues rock guitar playing at it’s best.

This brand-new, completely unreleased studio album features 12 previously unreleased studio recordings totalling over 60 minutes of unheard Jimi Hendrix. Ten of these recordings were made between February and May, 1969, as the Jimi Hendrix Experience set out to create the sequel to their groundbreaking 1968 double-album Electric Ladyland. The album features “Valleys Of Neptune,” one of the most sought after of all of Hendrix’s commercially unavailable recordings, and includes exciting 1969 arrangements of the classic signature songs “Red House,” “Fire,” and “Stone Free.” Also includes unheard studio versions of Hendrix’s inspired interpretations of “Bleeding Heart” (Elmore James) and Cream’s “Sunshine Of Your Love.” Mixed by Eddie Kramer, the engineer for all of Hendrix’s albums throughout the guitarist’s lifetime. Produced by Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer, and John McDermott, the team behind all of the acclaimed Jimi Hendrix CD and DVD releases since 1996.

VALLEYS OF NEPTUNE: Track by Track
All of the 12 recordings featured on the album have never before been released on a CD/LP. The songs document the pivotal time period after Electric Ladyland and before Electric Lady Studios and the recordings made there that would later take form as Cry of Love and First Rays.

Valleys of Neptune documents both the final studio recordings Jimi made in 1969 with the original Jimi Hendrix Experience and the first efforts with new bassist Billy Cox. As a number of the song titles will be familiar to fans and buyers alike, the following details the key characteristics of each of the tracks on Valleys of Neptune.

"Stone Free": The original 1966 recording by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience is best known as one of Jimi’s signature songs. The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set (2000) featured a new remake by the original group. Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell, and Billy Cox recorded this version in May 1969. It is a different recording entirely.

"Valleys of Neptune": This track was recorded in September, 1969, and May, 1970. This full-band version has never been released. An extract of a demo Hendrix made of this song -- featuring just Mitchell on drums and percussionist Juma Sultan -- was part of the short-lived Reprise/Polydor album Lifelines, which was in the marketplace between 1990 to 1992.

"Bleeding Heart": This cover of the classic blues song by Elmore James is different entirely from the versions featured on South Saturn Delta and (originally) on War Heroes. This recording has never been issued and features Jimi, Billy Cox, and drummer Rocky Isaac. It was recorded in April, 1969.

"Hear My Train A Comin’": This electric, full-band version is different from the famous 12-string acoustic version that was featured in the 1973 documentary Jimi Hendrix and subsequently on the album Jimi Hendrix: Blues.

"Mr. Bad Luck": Like “Valleys of Neptune”, a different version of this song was part of Lifelines in (1990). Jimi would later develop this song as “Look Over Yonder,” issued as part of South Saturn Delta.

"Sunshine of Your Love": A stage favorite for the group during the 1969 period which has never been released.

"Lover Man": Jimi recorded many different arrangements of this song, including the versions on both the Jimi Hendrix Experience box set (2000) and South Saturn Delta. This is an entirely different recording made in February, 1969.

"Ships Passing Through the Night": A never-before-released track taken from the last recording session by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience on 4/14/69.

"Fire/Red House": Both of these songs by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience were recorded at the same February, 1969, session. They feature the expanded stage arrangements Jimi had developed and are not alternate takes of the original 1967 recordings.

"Lullaby for the Summer/Crying Blue Rain": These April, 1969, recordings by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience have never been released.

Another great collection of Blues Rock classics – definately on the rock side of blues rock. It gets heavy at times, with some of the very best British rock bands of the 1960s and 1970s getting down and bluesey.

This 90 min DVD features 16 songs, by 16 different artists, including the Moody Blues, Wishbone Ash, Uriah Heep, Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher, Robin Trower. Opening up with Free’s Mr Big, the scene is set immediately, and doesn’t stop for a full 90 minutes. Every track is killer, with some superb guitar playing throughout.

Unfortunately, this DVD is not that widely available. Buy it if you can find it!

A great collection of blues rock music. There’s rocky blues, and bluesy rock. This is definately the latter; a collection of British and American rock acts attempting the blues – and pulling it off superbly. Click through to Amazon to check the soundclips. If you want to explore the bluesiness of 1960s rock, here would be a great place to start. From well-known classics by the likes of The Animals and Procul Harum, to lesser known (but just as good) nuggets by Savoy Brown, Traffic and the Electric Flag.
